My May Extra Effort

May is almost over, I know. I have a huge list of things to accomplish that keeps piling up in my head, and I’m starting to get a big list of client work to work on as well. There are some really important things I need to do but they always get pushed aside by something: Too busy with Project XYZ, too tired from working on Project XYZ, LOST is on TV, etc.

So with season finales, and June just around the corner, I think that some of my goals are still achievable in May if I really work at them.

First, I should really post more

I don’t know how other people do it. I can barely find the time to post anything, let alone post multiple times a day. Second, I think I get discouraged because I’m writing mostly for myself, and I don’t think I’m a great writer by any stretch. Nobody seems to read my blog. That’s probably because there’s next to nothing to read.

In the spirit of “if you build it, they will come”, I’m going to attempt to post at least twice a week until the end of May, and then re-evaluate my goal.

Second, I should really build my own WP Theme

I’m a web designer for crap sakes! I don’t even have an online portfolio or anything else showcasing my work. I need to get my crap together. At the very least until my overly-ambitious portfolio website is complete, I should spend the time to make my own WordPress theme for myself.

I’ve heard the expressions that “The plumber has the leaky pipes at home” or “The shoe maker’s kids go to school barefoot”, and I would like to apply those metaphors to myself. I am a very busy guy (at least I think so). However, I don’t know how true that is for me.

I don’t think I could say that my personal stuff suffers because I’m too busy working on client work. My personal stuff suffers because I’m super picky about my own stuff, and there’s always something better on TV.

I’m going to attempt to have a fully functional WP Theme before May rolls over into June.

Third, and contradicting 1 & 2, I should get out more

I’m turning into a fat skinny guy. I need to step away from the computer more. Take walks, exercise, eat better foods.

I love my work. I could very easily get caught up doing tons of work and have lots of portfolio stuff to show for it. But like I mentioned: I have a wife and a son that I love spending time with. Amanda and I are all geared up to live healthier lives. I have a weight loss goal, and something that resembles the beginning of a light exercise plan.

Although this goal is not for end of May, I would say that the end of May could be my first milestone to check my progress. So far I’ve cut back on portions, and cut out some huge sources of sugar. As for exercising, Amanda and I are talking the boy for walks often. It’s been rather crappy out lately, and so It’s been tricky, but this weekend looks like it will be nice again.

So there it is. Nothing huge to overcome, just my laziness and fatigue.
